I suck!

posted Monday, 28 January 2008

Dang yall, has it really been that long?  I haven't blogged anything in over two weeks and I feel just horrible about it.  Well, not really but I do need to be more consistent though.

I hope everyone had an entertaining and safe weekend.  We didn't do much this weekend, which kind of sucks because the weather was BEAUTIFUL.  It was like 55 and sunny Saturday and 63 on Sunday.  Woooo Whoooo!!!  I was so happy and am praying that this means winter is coming to an end.  But as I type this I'm not happy because the News is on and they JUST seconds ago said theres a storm coning into Denver and it means cooler temps for later in the week.  DAMN IT!!!!  I swear I need to move to some tropical island somewhere where I could just chill on the beach all day.  I'm so sick of the cold and I really sometimes think I have Seasonal Affective Disorder. But anyway...... As I was saying.... the weekend......

Hubby worked Saturday until about 1 and my daughter had her school interview for middle school that same day at 11.  I'll tell yall more about the interview in a bit.  Hubby's cooking on Sunday continues.  YEAY!!!!!  Because it was so nice on Sunday we, or should I say He, decided to grill.  We just did burgers and hot dogs and of course the basic sides, cause you know we're PO Black folks right now.  lol.  It was cool though.  We definitely need a gas grill though cause messing with charcoal and trying to get that crap to light is a pain in the ASS and why do they always end up turning BRIGHT red when you're ALL DONE grilling???  That amazes me.  But basically we just chilled around the house all weekend doing the normal, eating and watching movies.  LAZY!!!!  lol

So, to the interview.....

Well let me explain a bit first.  A few months back someone from Denver Center for International Studies(DCIS) came to my daughters school to provide information to the students about this school and basically do recruiting.  My daughter was all amped and excited about going to the school and after getting more info about the school, I was somewhat excited also.  The school is 6th-12th grade and if you want to read more details about the school you can just click on the link.  I don't feel like explaining it all right now cause I'm lazy.  lol  Anyway, you had to apply to the school by filling out an application, provide transcripts, standardized test scores, attendance records, report cards, current progress report cards, 3 letters of recommendations and submit some form of art work.  So we got all that information together and then got an interview with the school.  Which takes us to Saturday.......

Our interview was at 11 and apparently they were holding parent information sessions that you HAD to attend before leaving the school.  The last session they had listed was at 11:15 so I'm trying to figure out how this is going to happen.  We were escorted to the interviewer's room by one of the students at the school and when we get there, the interviewer isn't in the room.  The girl who was SUCH a sweetheart told us to just have a seat and wait there and she would go find her.  So the woman interviewing my daughter walks up 5 minutes later.  It's now just about 11:10.  Hmmmm.   She introduces herself, gives us some piss poor excuse for her not being in the room, tells me she also has to use the rest room (uh, OK) and quickly explains that she'll interview my daughter and then call me in after the interview.   I sit and start reading over paperwork explaining the interview process and what I need to do before leaving the school.  I'm reading about the interview process and it says the interview will be 15 minutes and then afterwards the parent can participate, get info about how the interview went and ask questions, etc...

Less than 5 minutes later my daughter comes and gets me and I sit down thinking we're about to go over how the interview went.  She's looking over my daughters paperwork and then goes on to say "It looks like Daughter has quite a few tardies."  Ok let me back up for a sec.

When school started I was dropping my daughter off everyday at 8:15 because class started at 8:20.  Well apparently the school decided that THIS school year school was going to start at 8:10 instead of 8:20 like the previous school year.  And when they decided this, the neglected to inform parents.  Yell I know, WTF right? I blogged about how F'ed up her school is and their lack of communication with parents before, but I cant find the entry.  So anyway, I didn't find out that they changed the start time until I attended conferences almost a month into the school year.  Fast forward to the interview............

So I explain the tardies to the woman and she's acting like she doesn't believe me and asks how far we live from the school.  I tell her just a few blocks and her getting to school on time isn't an issue and wont be an issue next school year if she attends DCIS.  She tells me that there are a few good schools close to our neighborhood and aks if I were familiar with the schools.  I told her no and am thinking to myself 'who in the HELL is she to decide WHAT is a good school for my daughter and if I was interested in the OTHER schools I would have applied THERE!  HELLO!!!!' Duh She's asking me how far we live from DCIS and I felt like she was trying to dissuade me from having my daughter attend.  She then goes on to tell me she'll walk me to the office so we can have this letter notarized that came with the application.  AND THAT was the end of the interview.  I'm like where the hell was my opportunity to ask questions and find out how the interview went?   I don't feel like the few minutes she met with my daughter is long enough to get a feel for her personality and make a decision as to whether or not she's a good fit for the school.  I decided I wouldn't address it with her cause odds are all she would do is piss me off.  I decided I'd call the school later to speak with an administrator.  So we go to the office and have the letter signed and then I talk with the secretary about the meeting.  She said that there were people finishing up interviews and because of that they would have another parent information session in 15 minutes.  So I'm like cool.  We go wait for the session to start and when it's time guess who is facilitating the session????  The principal.  SWEET!!!!!

By the way I'm pretty pleased about the school and the info that was presented. I like the schools curriculum, the programs that are offered and the opportunities available to students that attend.  So after the meeting other parents are coming in for yet ANOTHER session so I pull the principal to the side and speak with him about the interview.  He apologizes and asks me to leave a little note in the office reminding him of the situation and with my number so he can follow up with me.  I asked him how much weight is placed on the interview, because I'm sure they will take into consideration my daughters grades, test scores and recommendations.  He's says that it plays a small part in their decision.

Now let me remind yall that my daughter is an EXCELLENT student with great grades. Graduation I wrote about it some here.  Not to mention that my baby was honored at a ceremony in December because of her leadership abilities and her academics and received a bike.  She was nominated by her teacher and by her principal and in turn was invited to attend the World Leadership Forum in D.C, she has participated in Student Council for 2 years, has been a peer mediator for 2 years, is in Shakespeare, was elected to attend and be a leader in a computer program after school daily and attends the tutoring program before school and is in the Talented and Gifted program.  I think ALL this is enough to pretty much guarantee her admittance to this school.  Can you say proud Mama???  Lol.  So I'm looking forward to having a conversation with the principal.  In the event that she's not accepted we'll be looking into this school and this school, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping she accepted.

In other news, it's back to work for me full time come Wednesday.     I'm sad and I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little sidekick all day, but I'm looking forward to having that extra income.  My son is going to be graduating next year so we really need to start putting some extra money aside for that.  I really want to be able to get him a car but his little silly butt hasn't even made an attempt to get his license.  He'll be 17 in April and I'm like 'WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR and WHAT KIND OF TEENAGER ARE YOU???'  Do yall know have ANY idea how much easier my life would be if he would get his license?  It would be so lovely to not have to chauffeur his butt around anymore.  It really trips me out that he graduates next yearTeddy Gradhow grown he's getting and how SOON he's gonna be out of the house.  Ok, let me quit because I'm going to start getting sad again.  But man, they grow up wayyyy too fast.

Ok, I just realized this is getting SUPER long so I'll get with you all later.  HAVE A FANTABULOUS WEEK!!!!!

Oh yeah, making the band 4 today.  YEAH BOYYYYY!

You are a great mom to be so involved with your daughter's school and all the possibilities there are for someone as talented and bright as she is. Kudos to you both!

I hope the driver's license comes soon. He just likes that extra time with you when you are carting him around... ;)

Having been a teen not so long ago...I remember my mom wanting me to hurry up and get my license...and I knew WHY she wanted me to get my license at 16. Me, I didn't care to turn into the car driving helper, so I understand your boy, LMAO.

Congrats to your daughter on being such an excellent student, I'm keeping my fingers crossed she gets into that school...and BOO on that interviewer. I hope the principal follows up on that!

@ Gina: Awww thanks. That means a lot.

@ Kasandra: You're right, usually kids are all hyped up LONG before 16. He better get on it. I can't wait to hear back either. We should hear no later than Feb 18th.

@ Mamba: I don't want him to run errands, cause it would make me nervous with him being out there like that. I just hate running up to the school umpteen million times a day. He works with the b ball team when they have games so I get all grumpy having to leave the house at 10 or so when I'm all comfy and wanting to be in the bed. And WHY was he taking the practice test online today. He must've been reading my blog. Lol.

I'm proud of my little girl. She's always done so well and I want it to pay off for her. Me and the principal played phone tag today so hopefully I'll get a chance to chat with him tomorrow. I know I wanted to SLAP the mess out of the interviewer, but cooler heads prevailed, thank goodness. Lol

That interviewer was so messed up. If she wanted to ask you about the tardies, she could have just asked instead of making insinuations. I don't like people like that. On the hand I'm glad that your daughter's grades and scores are phenomenal like that. I hope she gets in.

Girl...I know what you mean when you say it trips you out about him graduating soon. My son graduates in May (Can you believe it...Newy is going to have a son in college!!!) I am debating on the car...he is going away to college and I really want him to focus on school. I will get him a car second semester if his grades are tight first semester.

only thing that heffa could say was "ohh she have some tardies" ANNND, your point is? Sh*t teachers don't start teaching good til class half over ANYWAY. Some people are funny. And even with TARDIES lil ma still getting GREAT grades, faculty AND administrator recommendations AND a trip to the unites states capital. So obviously TARDIES are NOT an issue. *rollin eyes*

That Seasonal Affect Disorder can be dealt with by preparing for the season. Getting brighter lighting in the home or office. Putting up pictures of the time of year you prefer. If you suffer some depression during the season, it's important to schedule events that make you feel better for that time of year. My mother and former employer suffers from this too. My mother does nothing every year to make things better. When I pointed out to my ex-employer what he could do to avoid the mood, he change how he handled the season and is much better. Go figure!

As far as schools for children, this is a fight every parent has to go through no matter what. And so often decisions are made regarding children on the whims of those who are in charge.

Sometimes social conditions in a school can be helpful to overall success, but in general success is normally determined by how well you work the passions you have, not the school you've gone to. Harvard and Yale have many graduates who aren't leading fantastic lives. Good Luck!

@ Rashan: I wanted to pop her in the head, but of course that would have pretty much solidified my baby not getting in huh? Lol

@ Newy: Ok, are we getting old? All these dang half grown kids!!!! Lol That's a good idea about waiting on the car. I may have to do that if my son stays in state. We'll see.

@ Aly: Some teachers don't teach AT ALL!!! And I was thinking the SAME thing. Like how big of an issue are her tardies if she is STILL doing so great academically. .Freaking dumb lady. Lol

@ Capt: Hey Big Brother!!!! I don't really have the disorder, it just feels like it sometimes. I've been so exhausted lately if I didn't know better I'd think I had another little one on the way. Lol It's funny though because it's amazing how the sun puts me in a MUCH better upbeat mood. Maybe I need to check to make sure I DON'T really have it.

I agree with you 100% about a child's success being determined by their passions and not necessarily the school. Although I can't help but feel that her going to a good school will only encourage more growth. I do get really tired of dealing with schools and their administrators which is why I always go back and forth with the idea of homeschooling. I think at this point with the older kids that idea is pretty much a wash. It may be a more realistic idea with the baby though. We'll see.

@ Ang: Thanks!!!! LMAO at you calling her a twit, because that's EXACTLY what she was.

  • I don't really suck, I was just saying that since it had been so long since I posted. And yep, the cooking continues. Yeay Hubby!!! lol I actually think he's really enjoying it.

A little note about grilling. I usually put aluminum foil at the bottom of the grill and then pour my charcoal in there. Lighter fluid works well to get it started. Instead of cooking right away, wait for the coals to get hot (red) before cooking. No taste of lighter fluid in the food and the food cooks more evenly.
